YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 px at 16:9 with a minimum width of 640 px. The thing people get wrong is designing at full size and never once looking at the result small, which is the size almost every impression is actually served at.
Where it shows
- Home feed grid on web and mobile
- Search results rows
- Up next sidebar on the watch page
- Channel page video tab
- Subscriptions feed
The safe zone
YouTube prints the video duration over the bottom right corner of the thumbnail in nearly every grid, search row and sidebar placement, and a red watched progress bar runs along the bottom edge for anyone who has already started the video. The channel avatar sits just below the lower left in feed cards, so type that runs to that corner collides with it visually even though it is not covered. Keep faces and the words you need read inside the middle of the frame, and treat the bottom right corner as unusable.
Quirks worth knowing
- The upload ceiling depends on where you upload from. YouTube Help lists 2 MB from mobile and 50 MB from desktop for a video thumbnail, and this record carries the 2 MB figure because it is the one that actually rejects files.
- YouTube publishes 3840 x 2160 px as the recommended resolution even though no YouTube surface displays a thumbnail anywhere near that size. The number buys encoder headroom, it does not describe a display size.
- Custom thumbnails need a verified account. Until you verify at youtube.com/verify, YouTube only offers the three frames it auto generated from your video.
- Thumbnails are judged against Community Guidelines on their own. YouTube can strike a video and pull custom thumbnail privileges from the whole channel over a thumbnail even when the video itself is fine.
- Podcast playlist artwork on YouTube is 1:1 rather than 16:9, so a thumbnail built for a video gets centre cropped if you reuse it there.
- 1280 x 720 px is the size most creators still export, and it clears every published requirement, but it is no longer the figure on YouTube's help page.
Common mistakes
- Setting the video title as the thumbnail text, so the same words appear twice on the watch page once YouTube prints the real title underneath.
- Running the headline into the bottom right corner where the duration stamp is printed over it.
- Reusing a 16:9 thumbnail on a Short, where YouTube expects 9:16 and the sides are thrown away.
- Uploading a file over 2 MB from the phone app and reading the failure as a YouTube bug rather than the mobile cap.
What we recommend
- Export at 1920 x 1080 px unless you have a reason not to. It is the same 16:9 frame, it clears the 640 px minimum many times over, and it stays under the 2 MB mobile limit.
- Look at the thumbnail at about a fifth of full size before publishing. If the subject is unreadable there, detail at full size does not rescue it.
- Hold the readable text to three or four words. The title already carries the sentence, and the thumbnail is competing with a column of others.
- Keep the layered file. YouTube lets you swap a thumbnail on a published video at any time, and a second version is only worth testing if you can edit the first.
Common questions
Why is my YouTube thumbnail blurry?
It is almost always compression rather than resolution. YouTube re-encodes every thumbnail and serves smaller derivatives into feed and sidebar slots, and thin type, soft gradients and busy backgrounds are what fall apart first. Export at 1920 x 1080 px or larger and put flat areas of colour behind any text.
Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?
Custom thumbnails require a verified account. Confirm a phone number at youtube.com/verify, reload YouTube Studio, and the upload option appears alongside the three auto generated frames. If it is still missing, check whether the channel lost thumbnail privileges from an earlier Community Guidelines strike.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026?
YouTube Help lists 3840 x 2160 px at 16:9 with a minimum width of 640 px. 1920 x 1080 px remains the practical export because it is the same shape, far above the minimum, and small enough to upload from a phone under the 2 MB mobile cap. The aspect ratio matters much more than the pixel count.
Does changing a YouTube thumbnail hurt the video?
Swapping a thumbnail does not delete views or restart the video's ranking, and YouTube says a re-rank after a change comes from how viewers respond rather than from the act of changing it. The new image propagates within a few minutes, though an already loaded feed can show the old one until it refreshes. The real cost is on a video that is currently performing, because you lose the ability to compare.
Why does my thumbnail look different on mobile?
Phone feed cards render the thumbnail much wider relative to the screen than the desktop sidebar does, and the duration stamp and channel avatar land in slightly different places. The 16:9 frame is kept in both, so nothing is cropped, but small type that reads on a large monitor disappears on a phone. Check it on a phone before publishing.
