A Shorts cover only ever appears as a still in browsable places such as the channel Shorts shelf, search results and hashtag or audio pages. In the Shorts player itself the video starts immediately and the cover is never shown, while the title, channel handle, description, sound label and the like, comment and share column sit over the frame. Keep the subject and any wording in the upper two thirds, clear of the bottom strip where the caption and audio row live and clear of the right edge where the action buttons stack.
Quirks worth knowing
- YouTube publishes a minimum height of 640 px for a Shorts thumbnail rather than a minimum width, which is the reverse of the 16:9 rule, so minWidth is null on this record.
- Custom Shorts covers are desktop only. YouTube Help states they can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, so a creator who shoots, edits and posts entirely on a phone cannot set one at all.
- If you put a 16:9 custom thumbnail on a vertical video, YouTube replaces it with an auto generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages while keeping your custom one on the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms.
- Before custom uploads existed the only option was picking a frame out of the Short, and that fallback is still what an unverified account gets.
- The desktop ceiling for a Shorts thumbnail is 50 MB, matching long form thumbnails, and it is nowhere near a real constraint at this size.
- The cover is a discovery asset only. Someone swiping the Shorts feed sees your first frame playing, never the cover, so the two images do different jobs.
Common mistakes
- Treating the cover and the opening frame as unrelated images, so the grid promises one thing and the swipe delivers another.
- Putting the hook text in the bottom third, where the title, handle and sound label cover it on every surface that renders chrome over the Short.
- Cropping a 16:9 thumbnail down to 9:16 and losing the subject instead of rebuilding the layout for the tall frame.
- Publishing without a cover because the option was not in the mobile app and assuming it does not exist.
What we recommend
- Export at 1080 x 1920 px. It is the native Shorts frame, it clears the 640 px minimum height comfortably, and it matches what your editor already outputs.
- Make the cover a cleaned up version of your opening frame rather than a separate design, so the move from grid to playback stays continuous.
- Set the cover from a computer in YouTube Studio under Content and then Shorts, even for a Short you posted from your phone. It can be added after publishing.
- Keep the readable words in the top half, which is the part that survives in the channel Shorts grid where covers are stacked three across.

Can you change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail after posting?
Yes, and for most creators that is the only way to set one. Open YouTube Studio on a computer, go to Content and then the Shorts tab, select the Short, and upload a file under Thumbnail. The change applies to grid and search views and leaves the video itself untouched.
