The safe zone
The square you upload is masked to a circle, so the four corners are discarded. On top of that, the picture is smallest in the For You player, where it sits above the like button on the right rail with a follow plus badge overlapping its lower edge. Keep the mark centred and clear of the bottom of the circle so that badge does not land on it, and treat the corners as unusable space rather than background.
Quirks worth knowing
- TikTok accepts a photo as small as 20 x 20 px, per Hootsuite's current size guide, so nothing stops a thumbnail sized file from becoming your avatar.

Common mistakes
- Uploading at the 20 x 20 px minimum because it was accepted, then finding the profile header renders it as a blur.
- Placing the mark low in the square, where the follow plus badge covers it in the player.
- Choosing a white or near white background, which merges with the ring drawn around the circle in the feed.
- Reusing a wide banner logo, which the square upload and the circular mask cut on two axes.
