Upload an Instagram profile picture at 320 x 320 px. It renders as a circle at around 110 px, so the corners of your square are discarded and fine detail disappears in the downscale.
Where it shows
- Profile header
- Every post byline in the feed
- Story tray ring at the top of the feed
- Comment and direct message threads
- Search and suggested account lists
The safe zone
The upload is a square and the render is a circle inscribed in it, so all four corners are dropped. Roughly a fifth of the square you send is never drawn on any surface. Keep the mark or the face inside a centred circular guide and put nothing in the corners you would miss. When you have an active Story a gradient ring is drawn around the circle and the picture is inset a little further, so artwork that touches the circle edge looks cramped against that ring.
Quirks worth knowing
- Instagram publishes no profile photo size. The 320 x 320 px upload figure comes from Buffer and Hootsuite, and Sprout Social lists the render at 110 x 110 px.
- The gap between a 320 px upload and a roughly 110 px render means the picture is scaled down by about two thirds before anyone sees it, which is where thin strokes vanish.
- It is the only Instagram asset never shown as a rectangle, so the square layout logic you use everywhere else does not apply here.
- In a comment thread the circle is drawn far smaller than on the profile header, and that is the size at which wordmarks stop being readable.
- The Story ring sits just outside the circle and changes colour, so a picture with a coloured outer edge competes with it.
- There is no crop or zoom adjustment after upload. Replacing the file is the only way to reposition what is inside the circle.
Common mistakes
- Uploading a full wordmark, which is legible on the profile header and unreadable in the comment list.
- Designing a square logo lockup and losing the corner elements to the circular mask.
- Cropping a photo tight to the head, so the circle slices into the hair and the chin.
- Sending a low resolution file because the render is small, which still looks soft on a high density screen.
What we recommend
- Upload at 320 x 320 px or larger and keep the file square, since Instagram masks rather than resizes to fit.
- Use a single letter, a symbol or a face rather than a full name, so it holds up at comment thread size.
- Draw a circular guide inside the square and treat everything outside it as already deleted.
- Choose a background colour that is not close to the Story ring gradient, so the ring still reads as a ring.
Common questions
What size is an Instagram profile picture?
Upload a square at 320 x 320 px, the figure Buffer and Hootsuite both give. Instagram does not publish an official number for it. Sprout Social lists the on screen render at 110 x 110 px, so what you upload is scaled down well before anyone sees it.
Why does Instagram cut the corners off my profile picture?
Instagram masks the square you upload into a circle. A circle inscribed in a square leaves about 21 percent of the area outside it, and that part is simply not drawn. Anything you place in a corner is invisible on every surface.
Can I reposition my Instagram profile picture after uploading?
No. There is no crop or zoom control once the picture is set. The only way to change the framing is to crop the image yourself and upload it again, which is why centring the subject before uploading is worth the extra minute.
Why does my logo look blurry as a profile picture?
The render is roughly 110 px across while the file is 320 px, so every line is scaled down by about two thirds. Hairline strokes and small type break apart at that size. A simplified mark with thick shapes survives where a detailed logo does not.
