An Instagram carousel slide is 1080 x 1350 px. Every slide inherits the aspect ratio of the first one, so a square opening slide forces the rest of the set into squares whatever you designed them at.

Where it shows

The safe zone

Slide one is doing two jobs, because it is also the profile grid tile at 3:4. While someone swipes, a slide counter badge sits in the top right of the image and the dot indicator sits just under it, so neither the top right corner nor the bottom edge is fully clear. Keep swipe cues and page numbers at least 60 px in from the right edge and 60 px up from the bottom, and keep the slide one headline inside the middle 1012 px column so the grid tile does not clip it.

Common questions

Why do my carousel slides look squashed?

Instagram locks every slide to the aspect ratio of the first one. Meta's publishing documentation states that carousel images are cropped based on the first image, with 1:1 as the default. If slide one is square, a 4:5 slide two is cropped to square to match it.

How many photos can I put in one Instagram carousel?

20 in the app, according to Sprout Social's current size guide, with a minimum of 2. Meta's publishing API still caps a carousel container at 10 items, so anything scheduled through a third party tool tops out at 10. That gap catches a lot of people who design 20 slides and then schedule the post.

Which slide shows up on my profile grid?

Only the first, cropped to the 3:4 tile. Slides two onward are invisible until someone taps in and swipes. That makes slide one both the hook and the grid design, which is why a plain title card wastes the strongest position in the set.

Can I reorder carousel slides after posting?

No. Order and aspect ratio are both fixed at post time. You can reposition the grid crop of slide one through Adjust Preview, but reordering, replacing or re-cropping the slides themselves means deleting and reposting.

Can I make a panorama across several carousel slides?

You can, but it will not read as continuous. Instagram shows one full slide at a time with no partial view of the neighbours, so a split image lands as separate pieces rather than one wide scene. A repeated motif holds a set together better than a split background does.
