What fonts work best on YouTube thumbnails?
Heavy display faces with thick, even strokes. A thumbnail is read at roughly 168 pixels wide in the desktop sidebar, and at that size thin strokes and fine detail collapse into grey texture. Anton, Bebas Neue, Archivo Black, Alfa Slab One and Bungee all keep their shape when the image is scaled down. Light weights, delicate serifs and script faces do not. Should a thumbnail use two different fonts?
Two at most. One loud display face carries the three or four words that do the work, and one plain sans handles anything secondary such as an episode number, a price or a date. Two faces give you contrast in weight and size without the design falling apart. Three faces on a 1280 by 720 canvas reads as noise, and at sidebar size the third one is unreadable anyway. How many words should thumbnail text be?
Three to five words. YouTube already prints the full title next to your thumbnail on every surface, so repeating the title spends the space twice. The thumbnail text should add the part the title does not say, usually the stake, the number or the twist. If your headline needs more than five words to make sense, the idea is not sharp enough yet, and no font pairing rescues that. Are these fonts free to use on a thumbnail?
Yes. Every face in this previewer is published on Google Fonts under an open licence, either the SIL Open Font License or Apache 2.0, and both permit commercial use including thumbnails, video and monetised channels.
